No improvements yet. However, I have heard back from greystripe. They are currently updating/adding features to the reporting system so that's why I can't see any improvements yet. I have been assured that I am actually still making money, though I don't know how much at the moment. I have inquired further for some detail on recent earnings. Hopefully I will soon be able to report back that revenue is on the rise. The AdMob ads in Orchid have been interesting to watch. I get about 2% click-thru, and only around 58% fill rate. The strange part is that the fill rate is high (90%) in the evening from about 7:00pm(EST) to 10:00pm(EST). After that it dropps dramatically to around 50%, which by the end of the day means around 58% overall. I make 4x as much per game play during those few hours in the evening. Overall the AdMob in game ads are paying me just about exactly $1 for every 1000 games played. This kinda sucks, since I can easily see that a 100% fill rate would nearly double the revenue. Also, releasing Orchid increased the downloads of Origami Rose, though apparently not Daisy. I ran AdMob ads on the scores page: 00adam.com/iphone.jsp, but that only made about $0.40 per day. Google on the same page makes from $1.50 -> $4.50. This prompted me to try google for the mobile java site, but that bombed. So lately I have learned: 1) fill rates suck 2) Google AdSense performs very well for iPhone sites 3) Google AdSense sucks for mobile java sites 4) AdMob ads work well for mobile java sites 5) AdMob ads suck for iPhone sites 6) GetJar is performing poorly. This is likely due to ultra-low fill rates. Unfortunately, we don't have access to that info. We just see wildly fluctuating numbers of impressions. 6) People really like to grow virtual flowers.

That's actually pretty depressing. "Origami Rose" hasn't exactly been making me a lot of money It looks like Greystripe will have their reporting working soon though... at least that's what I'm told... again. I believe it this time. I see the reporting working again before March.

Well, keep us updated when you finally get some report! Some comments in the article were quite harsh with Greystripe: I want to believe these comment are ill-founded.

I just read through the comments, and most of the detractors are unfounded. They don't really have experience with Greystripe, or understand that they have solid Java distribution.
Greystripe's CPM prices are higher than banner ad CPC campaigns, but the click through rates are 5->10X higher, and they are full-screen for a bigger impact anyway. Greystripe isn't filling publisher's pockets with money from house ads like the one person mentioned, and the one guy who said "$0.03 eCPM" must have made the most terrible game on the planet. eCPM will be low if your game is only played ONCE, because the first time you run the game, it'll download info from Greystripe, but not show any ads.

Hey, I'm back Finished university and going to have a go at making games again! Probably will be PC games, but... I tried signing up for GreyStripe again under a different email and this time they have accepted me! Didn't even ask to review a game this time. Maybe it's the recession and they're desperate for new games... I just wondered though, have you had any improvement with ad revenue from GreyStripe? Is it even worth my while delving into mobile games again and trying to adwrap something?

I have had some improvement in revenue, but not a great deal. CPM is still 1/5 of the rate from 1 year ago. It has however been steadily increasing at a plodding pace.
If you are going to make a free mobile game, do it for iPhone or android. Forget J2ME as it's becoming difficult to get Greystripe to update their catalog with new games. Maybe this will change again after android gets rolling, but catalog updates have been few and far between for J2ME for a year now.
iPhone is a strange one. If you have a hit it's great, but otherwise you'll be one of 50,000 other apps. The app store ranking is based on downloads, so flashy wins every time. Greystripe's system for J2ME was/is the best form of distribution so its a real shame that they are kicking it to the curb and treating it like an ugly cousin now. I'll have more info about android next month. I'm 70% of the way through an android version of 'Origami Rose', and will be releasing when I've got the android beta from Greystripe later this month.

Hmm. Maybe I'll try adwrapping my one ready made J2ME game and distributing it elsewhere just to see what happens. Don't think I have the stomach to try learning iPhone dev or anything else at the moment though.
Thanks for the info!

Unfortunately, until Greystripe updates their catalog, you won't be able to make any money off it. They update the catalog at the same time as when they AdWrap your application.

Oh. Well! I assumed adwrapping would be instant. Guess I'll put it up anyway, then forget about it and work on a PC game for a bit.

Yeah, you'd think it would be instant. It instantly test wraps your app, but it won't be live and making money until they run their catalog update script/process/whatever.
What kind of game?

I have an idea or two for a 3rd person 3D puzzle PC game (+ with some jumping on the physics gameplay bandwagon). Might be a bit ambitious for one person though, but I have more experience with C++ and other PC tools than this mobile malarkey. I'll see!
I did have a look at embedding admob adds in a J2ME app but it seems they have now abandoned their api for that. Maybe I'll have a quick look into the Getjar MADI system you mention in another topic as well.
