I know this subject may be a bit polarizing, but hopefully that'll spur some discussion!
I have to say that the USB HDD Loader is the greatest Wii software ever. I know it's not 'official', and some(Nintendo) may think I'm evil for hacking my Wii, but I don't care. I put all of my games into the HDD and have a tone of room to spare. Now I don't have to worry about my 2yr old son destroying / hiding the discs all the time. Seriously, for this reason alone it's the best thing ever. My son loves to play with the game cases and their associated contents.
The games even load faster now. Yeah, yeah this software makes it easier for people to pirate games. I don't care. It sure does make life easier with the games I own. I have 20 or so Wii disc games.
In case anyone cares, I've been soft-hack'n consoles for a long time, so this isn't the first. I did my PS2, GameCube, Xbox, and 360.
-> The 360 hack was a waste of time, since nobody ever came out with any good homebrew, and now I can install games to the tiny HDD officially anyway. You CAN run custom software, but you need an OLD firmware to start with, but because of this requirement, nobody bothered with cool apps.
-> The PS2 was a NECESSARY hack in order to play games I bought. The stupid console stopped being able to play the 'blue' CD based discs like Gradius, and R-Type(I think it was blue). Anyhow, I had a bunch of blue games, but since they wouldn't play using the DVD drive, I had to install them onto the HDD and load from there just to play em. Also, it loaded everything faster, and made life better all around.
-> The Xbox-1 was pretty sweet. Back in the day, it was my media player for the TV. With the soft-hack, I could play just about and video from my computer(non HD) using XBMC, just by plugging it into my LAN(which it already was). Also installing games to the HDD was super convenient. It was also a great emulator box Lots of effort to replace the HDD in the box with a big one.
-> The GameCube softhack was kinda useless as well. I think somebody eventually came out with a HDD add on, but you needed a chip. I did this hack mostly for amusement.
